2017 will redefine luxury with items that tell a story of authenticity and timelessness without being ostentatious. My designs will include geometric shapes in fabrics, artisan glass and precious metals. Indigo blue and gold are my colors of the year.”

While 2016 was the year copper became ‘the metal of the moment’, I predict that this will start to wane and brass and gold will take over as our chosen metallics. Golds and brass warm up a space and reflective surfaces bounce light around a room and using a few well-chosen pieces as accents create a glamorous and affluent look no matter what your individual style. Consider bringing in a few gold metal trays, brushed gold hardware or a contemporary brass light fitting.

Artisan goods are getting more popular as buyers are consciously driven towards purchases that support small businesses. Locally made and sourced globally, artisanal products can be mixed with mass-produced items as well as with vintage finds.”

For 2017 we see the emerging trend towards brass and warm gold-tones gathering pace and the popularity of copper, bronze and rose-colored hues continuing. ‘Artisanal’ will be another keyword in interiors with a resurgence of natural fibers, organic shapes, hand-crafted accessories and handwoven textiles as the mood swings away from a throw-away culture and we see color and texture beginning to replace chrome and the sleek neutral boutique hotel look.”

It’s the time of sophisticated interiors that are rich in surfaces and color but pared back. A palette of one or two colors and rather than a lot of furniture each piece will be a stand-alone statement.

For 2017 we will see a move towards richer, warmer, darker shades. Inspiration will be taken from the past with the introduction of contemporary paint color palettes based on deep Victorian reds and elegant Georgian blues. During 2017 we will continue to see statement wallpaper and fabric designs influenced by the tropics. Introduce pineapple and palm tree prints in gold and dark navy to create a sophisticated and exotic interior.

Kelly Davies, Interior Designer

I am looking forward to working with softer, more airy tones in the upcoming year. I think materials like pale woods, pastel paint colors, and light metals will be an important part of design in 2017.”

Gabriella Palumbo, Interior Blogger

In 2017 we’ll be looking to nature for our color palette. Bringing the outside in with mossy greens and swampy blues to soothe and uplift. Colour will be personal, from the heart and depend on how you want to feel in a room.

There has been a real move towards the use of geometric and quilt-like patterns in floor tiles across a range of mediums from painted wood tiles to ceramics and encaustics, cement and even vinyls. Whether stark black and white or rendered in full spectrum of colors, these floors are certainly taking center stage this year!

My favorite rising trend for 2017 is the layering of metallics. The mix of soft, warm-toned metals – pale gold, rose gold and copper – creates the most glorious, uncontrived elegance and gives an exciting edge to pretty much any scheme.

Jo Hamilton, Interior Designer

One design trend that has started to pick up momentum, but will surely make a full splash in 2017 is patchwork tiles and patterned tiles.  The variety of patterns, colors, and applications are virtually endless. Perfect for instant ‘WOW’ factor!

Room Design

I think social media has a great influence on interiors right now. Everyone sees beautifully curated rooms on a daily basis in the palm of their hands. For that reason, I think we will see a lot of dressmaker details. More and more rooms will look custom designed. Bold patterns are another trend along with glazed linens and dramatic juxtaposing. I see a lot of urban coming back as well.”

Ryan Saghian, Interior Designer

I tend to see a flirting with simplicity, natural materials, uncluttered spaces, handmade objects and basic forms that excites me. In a world of over-consumption and quantity over quality, this seems to be a welcoming change that I feel will thrive over the following years.

The increased awareness of our responsibility for the health of our planet and the discreet omnipresence of technology will influence our interiors – bringing warmer colors, more natural materials and the widespread use of devices that will help to control in a more efficient way our resources.
