BAFTA 2018: Take a Look at the Nominees and Get to Know Joanna Lumley

Find out what BAFTA 2018 has in store to provide on the 18th of the next month. Several changes have been made, but will they work?

London is getting ready to, once again, welcome the most prestigious award show of the country. This year’s edition will have plenty of surprises, from Stephen Fry stepping down and Joanna Lumley taking over, to the nominees. BAFTA 2018 sure is a ceremony not to miss.

By the end of the 18th of February 2018, the world will find out what is the British Academy’s position on this year’s film pieces.

For starters, the host has changed.

For the past 12 years, Stephen Fry was the much-beloved host of the British Academy Film Awards but, this year is going to be different.

The next host to step in is going to be Joanna Lumley.

The legendary actress has won 3 BAFTA’s in the course of her impressive career and, in 2017, was presented with the BAFTA Fellowship.

Joanna has got over 70 credits in both television work and film.

Some of her most notorious work include a participation in The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013 and being in over 100 episodes of the 1973 television show, Coronation Street.

We think Joanna is the right person for the job and, also, she is very excited to do it!

Now, on to the nominees!

Lets start with the most anticipated category: Best Film.

This year has been a good one for movies, and that is proven by the sheer quality of the nominated motion pictures.

Call Me By Your Name: A young man named Elio is spending summer in his parents house in Italy. It seems like just another summer, until Oliver comes by to help Elio’s father with his research.

Darkest Hour: A film about Winston Churchill and Great-Britain back when war with Germany was inevitable, Churchill is pressured to make a deal with Hitler, but the German Dictator resists.

Dunkirk: A movie about the Second Wold War and when German forces were fighting France and surround allied troops in Dunkirk beach.

The Shape of Water: Elisa works in a lab that holds an amphibious man in captivity. After falling in love for the creature, she elaborates a plan to help him escape.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: After being upset by the police’s inefficiency for solving her daughter’s murder, Mildred decides to rent three billboards in a discrete street to bring awareness to the case, moving a lot of people.

And the nominees for Leading Actor, are…

Daniel Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread (this is Daniel Day-Lewis’s 7th BAFTA nomination, having won 4 times);

Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out (this is the first year Daniel is nominated, being also nominated for the Rising Star Award);

Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour (this is Gary’s 5th nomination, having won 2 of those times);

Jamie Bell for Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (this is Jamie’s second nomination, having won in 2001);

Timothée Chalamet for Call me by Your Name (this his first nomination).

And for Leading Actress, the nominees are…

Annette Bening for Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (this is Annette’s 4th nomination, having won in 2000);

Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside (this is Frances’s 4th nomination);

Margot Robbie for I, Tonya (this is Margot’s second BAFTA nomination);

Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water (this is Sally’s second BAFTA nomination);

Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird (this is Saoirse’s 4th BAFTA nomination).

And the nominees for Best Supporting Actress are:

Allison Janney (I, Tonya); Kristin Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour); Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird); Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water).

For Best Supporting Actor, the nominees are:

Christopher Plummer (All the money in the world); Hugh Grant (Paddington 2); Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri); Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project); Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).
