3 mistakes people make when hanging art

Art is something you buy with your heart. Hopefully, it’s love at first sight and you curate your pieces without weighing up if they’ll go with your vintage posters. With that in mind, it’s important to get the displaying of your pieces right. Here are 3 common mistakes made when displaying your pieces:

1. Disregarding scale.
A teeny-tiny watercolour will look ridiculous on a big white wall, but don’t think that you can’t display it here – perhaps just opt for a gallery-wall format. Look to the grounding elements that surround the piece for cues on scale. For example, if it’s hanging above your bed or your sofa, you’ll want to choose a larger-scale piece so all the elements of the room are complementary.

2. Choosing the wrong frame.
Your first port of call when choosing a frame is the artwork. You want your frame to play up the best features of the piece without dominating the look. That said, sometimes the best choice for an painting or poster is a super-ornate gilded frame, so trust your personal instinct when it comes to this one. If you plan on streamlining your interior style and having every piece in the same frame, you’ll want to go for a “less is more” option that lets individual works shine.

 3. Hanging it too high or too low.
Artwork complements a room best when viewed at eye level, and though it’s often hard take every family member’s height into your styling equation, it’s good to find a happy medium. There should be no neck-craning when looking at an artwork, and remember – in dining and living rooms, when you are seated more often, pieces should sit a little lower. If you’re not quite sure, why not cut out a piece of paper (the same size as your piece) and stick it to the wall as a guide, so you’re happy with where it sits before drilling a hole.
